Kala Chana Chaat | Famous Street-Style Chaat Recipe
Kala Chana Chaat (Street-Style)
Tangy, spicy boiled kala chana tossed with onion, tomato and lemon
Street-style kala chana chaat — boiled black chickpeas sautéed with cumin, ginger, green chilli, onion and tomato, finished with lemon juice and chaat masala. A protein-rich snack that's perfect for parties or evening tea.
Ingredients
Base
- 2 cups kala chana (black chickpeas), soaked overnight and boiled until tender
- 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
- 1 medium red onion, finely chopped
- 1 green chilli, chopped
- 1 tsp ginger, julienned or finely chopped
- 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- ¼ cup oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1–2 dried red chillies
- 1 tsp red chilli powder or chaat masala
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
Instructions
- Prep ingredients. Finely chop the onion and tomato. Squeeze lemon juice and set aside.
- Temper and sauté. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and dried red chilli. When the cumin browns lightly, add ginger and green chilli; cook about 2 minutes.
- Cook the base. Add chopped onion and tomato and cook until softened and jammy.
- Add chana and season. Add the boiled kala chana, salt, and red chilli powder or chaat masala. Pour in the lemon juice and mix everything together until well coated.
- Serve. Serve warm or at room temperature as a chaat or side.
Pro tip: Cook the onion–tomato base until thick so the chaat isn't watery — the lemon goes in at the end for a bright, street-vendor tang.
