Homemade Hot Cocoa | Easy Kids' Favorite Winter Drink
Homemade Hot Cocoa
Creamy, frothy winter hot chocolate — a kid-friendly favourite
Rich homemade hot cocoa — whole milk warmed with cocoa and sugar, whisked until frothy, then poured into mugs and topped with whipped cream, mini marshmallows and a candy cane. A quick, cozy drink for snow days and holiday mornings.
Ingredients
Hot Cocoa
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp sugar (or to taste)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Toppings
- Whipped cream
- Mini marshmallows
- Candy cane or seasonal sprinkles
Instructions
- Heat the milk. Pour the whole milk into a saucepan and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
- Add cocoa and sugar. Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar until smooth. Reduce heat and simmer briefly so the flavours meld.
- Froth. Mix well and whisk (or froth) until the hot cocoa is creamy and lightly foamy on top.
- Serve. Pour into mugs and garnish with whipped cream, marshmallows, and a candy cane. Serve immediately.
Pro tip: Whisk the cocoa and sugar into a little warm milk first if lumps form — then add the rest of the milk for a silky drink. Top generously while the cocoa is hot so the marshmallows soften slightly.
