Coconut Ladoo
Quick festival coconut laddu — soft, aromatic, beginner-friendly
Easy coconut ladoos — desiccated coconut cooked with milk and sugar (or condensed milk) until moist, shaped into balls, and optionally rolled in extra coconut. A fast mithai for Diwali and Navratri.
Ingredients
Main
- 2 cups desiccated coconut
- 1 cup milk (or ½ cup sweetened condensed milk)
- ¾ cup sugar (reduce if using condensed milk)
- ½ tsp green cardamom powder
- Extra desiccated coconut, for rolling
Instructions
- Cook. In a pan, combine milk and sugar. Add 1½ cups coconut and cardamom; cook until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides.
- Cool and shape. Cool slightly, roll into ladoos, and coat in remaining coconut.
Pro tip: Don't overcook once the mixture comes together — too dry and the ladoos crack; too wet and they won't hold shape.
The Story Behind This Dish
Coconut ladoos appear across coastal and inland India during Navratri and Diwali, where coconut is considered auspicious and offerings of nariyal mithai mark gratitude and celebration.
